| Abstract | This program, included in "Effective Reading Programs...," serves about 450 educationally disadvantaged children, aged from 3-5 years, and approximately 40 handicapped students, aged from 0-5 years. The overall goal of this project is to establish a partnership between school and parents for the purpose of educating preschool children. During the school year, community coordinators visit the homes of program children and give the parents learning activity packets designed to provide children with needed developmental activities. Every six weeks a reading party is held for program children and their parents in order to provide group learning experiences for the children and allow parents to discuss instructional ideas and techniques with the project staff. In addition, parents serve on curriculum committees that meet every three months. The locally developed curriculum is based on 38 instructional objectives and is divided into 48 activity packets and a summer activity packet. The curriculum is based on three levels of skill proficiency, including eight curriculum streams. (WR/AIR) |
